PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The man suspected of killing a person in Fairview Tuesday night was arrested after authorities say he re-entered the home where the shooting happened.
The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office responded to the shooting on Lincoln Street near 6th Street around 7 p.m. Tuesday. When deputies arrived, they found a person dead in the home’s backyard.
People who live in the area told KOIN 6 News they heard gunshots from a known-problem house.
MCSO said deputies set up a perimeter outside when they learned a woman with mobility issues was still inside and was struggling to get out.
They also reportedly learned weapons were being stored inside the home, prompting additional law enforcement — including a SWAT unit — to respond.
Once inside, SWAT members say they found the woman in the home’s basement. MCSO said she was unharmed and made it out safe.
After a thorough search of each room, SWAT members determined the home was clear and the suspect was nowhere to be found. Law enforcement officials remained at the scene overnight.
At around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, the suspect, 41-year-old Anthony Tibbits, tried to re-enter the house and was arrested by detectives that were still investigating, according to MCSO.
The sheriff’s office said Tibbits will be booked into Multnomah County jail on a second-degree murder charge.
Lydia Elizondo, who works at a group home for disabled adults that is just about 300 yards away, said she has never seen anything like this in the neighborhood.
“It’s kinda scary you know, not knowing that he was even out here,” she said.
The identity of the shooting victim will be released once their family is notified.
