ANN ARBOR, MI -- Ann Arbor is the best place in the country to have a family, according to a recent ranking from Fortune.
Ann Arbor clinched the No.1 ranking on an inaugural list of Best Places to Live for Families compiled by Fortune and released in late September.
Fortune evaluated nearly 2,000 locales with between 25,000 and 750,000 residents across the country, looking at categories like education, aging resources, general wellness and financial health.
The evaluation focused on the “sandwich generation” — those who are both raising children under 18 while caring for aging parents — and resources such as high-quality schools, health care, senior support and safe neighborhoods.
Ann Arbor was followed by Wylie, Texas; Olathe, Kansas; Mason, Ohio; and Morrisville, North Carolina. Novi also appeared on the list, clocking in at tenth place.
In addition to concentrating on resources for family members of all ages, Fortune also cut any town where the population was more than 90% white and non-Hispanic in an effort to highlight diverse areas. It also eliminated any place that was less diverse than either state or national medians.
Fortune also cut any places where the home sale prices were more than twice as high as the state median or more than 2.75 times as high as the national median.
Ann Arbor has clinched top spots in a similar ranking earlier this year, taking the No. 6 spot in the Best City to Live in America released by Niche.com.
