Submissions from nonprofit organizations for Briefly Speaking can be emailed to Carol Pinto-Smith at cpinto-­smith@triblive.com or mailed to Briefly Speaking, 210 Wood St., Tarentum, PA 15084. Include a complete address and daytime phone number. Submissions are due at least two weeks before the event. Each announcement is printed once; there is no fee.

Fundraisers

• A holiday craft and vendor show will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 1 in Mack Hall at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, 200 Leger Road, North Huntingdon. Free admission and parking. There will be a basket auction, concession stand and 50/50 raffle. Proceeds will benefit the church senior youth ministry. Details: 724-864-6364.

• St. Bruno Church, 1729 Poplar St., South Greensburg, will have its annual Apple Jamboree and Fall Craft Festival from noon to 5 p.m. Oct. 2 at the church. There will be food, beer, apple dumplings, entertainment and free children’s activities.

• Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Ligonier Valley will have a yard sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct 1 at the center, 1724 Route 30, Ligonier Township. Items will include antiques, collectibles, clothing, purses, fall and Christmas items and more. Proceeds will support Ligonier Valley Food Pantry and Westmoreland Food Bank.

• Pet Friends Inc. will sponsor a Save-A-Pet car cruise from 2 p.m. until dusk Oct. 1 at Quinn Brewing Inc., 3000 Commerce Loop, North Huntingdon. Vehicle registration: $5. Trophies will be awarded to the top 10 cars and the first 100 cars will receive a dash plaque. Bring a can or bag of dog food for a chance to win a lottery tree. There will be food trucks, craft vendors, a silent auction and 50/50. Details: petfriendsinc.com.

• The Disciples’ Hands ministry of Greensburg Church of Brethren will have a soup and sandwich fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 1 at the church, 554 Stanton St., Greensburg. Menu: hot sausage sandwich, $4; various soups by the quart, $5. Proceeds will be used locally to feed the hungry.

• Jeannette American Legion will host a bingo at 1 p.m. Oct. 2 at the post, 109 S. Fifth St. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. Cost: $25 per packet, includes regular and special games. Full extra packets and specials available. The kitchen will be open and there will be a 50/50. Proceeds benefit American Legion activities. Details: 724-523-6231.

• A takeout stuffed pork chop dinner to benefit the West Newton Little House Association will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 1 at Gary’s Chuckwagon, 109 S. Second St., West Newton. Menu: stuffed pork chop, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, apple sauce, roll and butter and white or chocolate cake, $15. Details and tickets: 724-872-7937.

Health

• Mt. Pleasant Veterans of Foreign Wars will sponsor a free health fair from noon to 2 p.m. at the post, 416 W. Main St. Screenings will be with Dr. Mouhanad Al-Fakih. Other services available will include vital signs, depression and bereavement screenings.

• Excela Health will offer wellness check diagnostic screenings by appointment from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. Oct. 8 at Scottdale Public Library, 106 Spring St. Sponsored by Scottdale Kiwanis. Covid-19 guidelines will be observed. Appointments required. Registration and details: 877-771-1234, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

Library news

• Adams Memorial Library, Latrobe, will sponsor a Halloween haunted houses craft workshop for adults at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 5 at the library, 1112 Ligonier St. Learn to make mini putz houses. Material fee: $3. Reservations required. Reservations: 724-539-1972 or stop in at the library.

Meetings

• Mt. Pleasant American Legion Auxiliary will meet at 6 p.m. Oct. 3 at the post, 752 W. Main St. A Swiss steak dinner will be served. Reservations required by Sept. 30. Dues for 2023 will be collected. Reservations: Kelly, 724-542-4478.

• Westmoreland Area Nurses Association will meet Oct. 3 at Panera, Eastgate Center, Hempfield. The meeting will begin at 4 p.m. and dinner will be ordered afterward. Details: Cordie, 412-841-8529.

• The Botanical Society of Westmoreland County is reorganizing after a two-year hiatus. The group will meet at 6 p.m. Oct. 5 in the Conservation Barn, 218 Donohoe Road, Hempfield. Officers will be elected and refreshments will be served. Past members and anyone who is interested in the study of local plants is welcome. Annual dues: $10 per individual; $15 per family.

Local chapters of the Women’s Business Network have scheduled meetings. Those attending can learn how the group supports the success and growth of women in business. Professional women are welcome and can attend as a guest at no cost. Some meetings will be held online. Call the chapter representative for more information.
