NMU flag to be lowered in honor of student who passed over the weekend

MARQUETTE, MI— The Northern Michigan University flag will be lowered to half-staff Thursday in remembrance of student Virgil Mongozid. He passed away on Sunday.

The 18-year-old L’Anse native was a freshman majoring in automotive maintenance. He was a member of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community and graduated from Baraga High School earlier this year.

Police from several agencies initiated a search when Mongozid went missing last week. He was found deceased in his truck across from Baraga County Memorial Hospital on Sunday.

Michigan State Police believe speed may have been a factor in the accident.
