GOLF

St. Mary’s 14.5, Westfield Technical Academy 9.5

St. Mary’s Gavin Connors posted a 43 to down Dan O’Connor, 3-1, and lead the Saints past the Westfield Tech Tigers in a high school golf matchup at East Mountain Country Club.

Mike Mason, Curt Piziak, and Caleb Viewig each won their matches against their respective Westfield Tech opponents. Andrew Reed and Tommy Knapik recorded individual wins for the Tiges.

“Every time we play St. Mary’s, it’s a close match,” Westfield Technical Academy golf coach Bob Eak said. “With a few exceptions, neither team played well today. It was a matter of a few mistakes here and there that made the difference. I thought Gavin Connors really came to play today, and it showed with his 43. The Saints outgolfed us today.”

St. Mary’s improved to 4-3 overall on the season and 3-3 in the Bi-County West while Westfield Tech fell to 7-1 (6-1).

GIRLS SOCCER

Athol’s Emma Goodreau nets four goals; Amelia Willenborg posts shutout

St. Mary’s 4, Athol 0

Emma Goodreau continued her torrid scoring pace for St. Mary’s, netting all four goals in a road shutout. Lillian Nadler had two assists and Kailyn Cabrini added one. Saints’ goalie Amelia Willenborg made 10 saves.

“It was a solid win for us tonight,” St. Mary’s girls soccer coach Patrick Olearcek said. “This was a long trip up there and we were sluggish in the first half but we played very well in the second half and received contributions from the whole team.”

“We have core players like Emma Goodreau, Macy Woodger, Lillian Nadler, Kailyn Cabrini, Aiden Levesque, Emma Bialas and Amelia WIllenborg, whom we rely on a great deal, especially when we are shorthanded four players it seems like every game,” Olearcek added. “The other girls stepped up though as the game went on. That’s the key for us to be successful.”

St. Mary’s improved to 5-1.
