A slice of United States history is on the market in Northampton.

The building at 135 Main Street once housed the Northampton National Bank — the site of the largest bank robbery in US history at the time in 1876 — and it is currently on sale for $2.25 million. You can find the listing here from Maple and Main Realty.

The robbers in the Northampton National Bank heist made off with $1.6 million in cash, bonds, and other securities, according to the New England Historical Society. The same thieves then robbed the Manhattan Savings Institution of $3 million two years later, breaking their own record for the largest bank robbery at the time. In today’s money, the Northampton haul is estimated to be worth more than $26 million.

The mastermind of the crime was named George Leslie, a young architect hailing from New York’s high society who led a double life, but he was never caught by police, the New England Historical Society wrote in an article about the Northampton heist.

The building was also owned for a time by Kevin Eastman, a creator of the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” In 2019, the building’s owner commissioned an artist to paint a mural depicting the famed 1876 robbery.

The property was built in 1833 in the Renaissance Revival Style by renowned architect W.F. Pratt, which was considered a modern architectural innovation in its day, the listing says. The building has a cast iron facade and it has a total 3,600-square-foot floor plan with another 1,100-square-foot lot.

The listing includes a 767-square-foot retail storefront with two bank vaults and one multi-level living room. The Vault, a vape and smoke accessories shop, currently occupies the first-floor storefront at 135 Main Street.

The residence on the property takes up the second and third floors, with a lofted office above the third floor and a two-tiered rooftop deck with panoramic views of the city and surrounding valley.

The second floor has a master bedroom with a bath and a second bedroom. The third floor is an open floor plan with a kitchen, living room, dining room, and a half-bath. An elevator services all three floors.
