My PROCESS is based on lots of RESEARCH. It’s based on ART, FASHION, PERIODS OF TIME, and special MOMENTS I’ve had on the DANCE FLOOR.

On November 25, Dijon will release her sophomore album, Black Girl Magic, which features collaborations with Channel Tres, Eve, and Luke Solomon. “It’s really about love and self-acceptance,” says Dijon, a fixture in the clubs of Berlin, where she’s based, who has helped soundtrack runway shows for Louis Vuitton and Dior. (She also has her own fashion brand under the Comme des Garçons umbrella.) In everything she does, Dijon seeks to pay homage to dance music’s birthplace in queer Black and Latin spaces. So when Beyoncé asked Dijon to help produce her recent dance-inspired album, Renaissance, she was excited by the opportunity to center those experiences. “Beyoncé wanted to celebrate the roots of dance culture in an authentic way,” she explains. “I’m very proud to share how much magic was created by marginalized people.” For this issue, Dijon curated a playlist around the theme of process, choosing a “broad brushstroke” of music that inspires her. Along with Kendrick Lamar’s “Mirror,” about his “process of healing and releasing shame as a Black artist,” Dijon included “BlackWater” by Octave One (a “house-music club anthem”) as well as her own single “Love Is a State of Mind.” “It encompasses everything I believe in,” she says of the latter track.
