Deontay Wilder likes the way Andy Ruiz thinks.

The former heavyweight titlist from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, said in an interview that he is all for matching up against Ruiz in the near future, echoing Ruiz’s own recent statements. Shortly after picking up a unanimous decision over Luis Ortiz earlier this month, Ruiz (35-2, 22 KOs) called out Wilder to a fight.

“If Deontay Wins in October, me and him are with the same management and we can make this fight happen,” Ruiz said. “Let’s do it. Let’s get it on.”

Ruiz, 32, later tweeted a mock poster on his social media accounts showing himself and Wilder facing off in the ring with the title “Wilder vs. Ruiz”.

Both Wilder and Ruiz, also a former titlist, are aligned with Premier Boxing Champions, the company headed by Al Haymon. Wilder is set to return from nearly a year’s absence from the ring Oct. 15 against Robert Helenius at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Wilder had been contemplating retirement after suffering an 11th-round knockout loss to Tyson Fury last October in their well-received trilogy.

“You gotta speak things into existence,” Wilder said on The Last Stand Podcast with Brian Custer. “October 15th I’ve got to handle business in Brooklyn at the Barclays Center.

“Once I handle business I’m always confident in myself … I’m looking forward to having a fight with Ruiz, for sure.”

A Wilder-Ruiz fight figures to be an interesting clash of styles, pitting Wilder’s lethal power against Ruiz’s fast hands.

Wilder said he had “blessed” Ruiz before, albeit unbeknownst to the Mexican-American, but would not elaborate.

“And upon that (the fight being finalized) I’ll reveal some things to him that he didn’t know,” Wilder said. “I’ve blessed him already before. He don’t even know this. But I’ll reveal it to him.”

In his last fight, Ruiz, who has been relatively inactive since his sensational stoppage of then unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, defeated Ortiz by unanimous decision, dropping the veteran Cuban three times in the process.
