As Governor declares state of emergency, Ian impacts sports in Athens, NE Ga

Governor Brian Kemp declares a state of emergency in advance of Hurricane Ian, which is intensifying in strength as it nears the Florida coast. The Governor’s declaration, which comes with the call-up of 500 National Guard members, is for all 159 counties in Georgia. Forecasters say the state could receive heavy rains and gusty winds into the weekend. There’s also the possibility the storm could make a second landfall near Savannah.

The University of Georgia says a soccer match that had been scheduled for Friday has been moved to Thursday in anticipation of heavy rain from the remnants of Hurricane Ian. The Georgia soccer team will host Alabama tomorrow night at the Turner Soccer Complex off South Milledge Avenue in Athens.

Today is homecoming parade day in Elberton: it steps off at 6:30 this evening and culminates with a pep rally on the square in downtown Elberton. The Elbert County High School homecoming football game that was scheduled for Friday night in the Granite Bowl is among the many games in northeast Georgia rescheduled for tomorrow night because of the threat of impact from Ian.
