The United States Marine Band will return to Clifton on Oct. 10 to give a free concert at Clifton High School, just one of the stops on its national concert tour, the first since the pandemic hit.

It is the band's second appearance in the city in five years. In 2017, “The President’s Own” band performed at the city's centennial celebration.

“We are incredibly excited to resume our national concert tour,” band Director Col. Jason K. Fettig said. “Musicians of the band are more eager than ever to share their musical talents with audiences live and in person.”

City officials said they were pleased to hear the Marine Band was returning.

"Someone must know someone," said Clifton's Keith Oakley, who introduced the band in 2017.

"It is not something you want to miss," Oakley, who heads Clifton's Avenue of Flags, said at the time. "You won't see anything like this anywhere."

The U.S. Marine Band practices before the rehearsal for the 59th Inaugural Ceremonies for President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 18, 2021.

The tour includes stops in 27 cities in 10 states and will feature musical selections in the style of the band’s 17th director, John Philip Sousa, who initiated the concert tour tradition in 1891.

The Marine Band is America’s oldest continuously active professional musical organization. Founded in 1798, the band has performed for every American president since John Adams.

In 1801 it earned its full moniker, “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band, after it performed for President Thomas Jefferson's inauguration. Jefferson recognized the unique relationship between the band and the chief executive, and he is credited with giving the Marine Band its title.

Gunnery Sgt. Joseph DeLuccio, a Vernon native, is a member of the United States Marine Band.

Concertgoers can expect a mix of works including traditional band repertoire, Sousa marches, contemporary compositions, vocal and instrumental solos and patriotic songs.
