District 233 gives approval to $63.8 million budget

The District 233 school board approved the $63.8 million budget for fiscal year 2023 at its Sept. 20 board meeting. The budget will cover expenses at Homewood-Flossmoor High School this year.

Lawrence Cook, chief school business official, reported the overall revenues will show a slight increase of 2.72% or approximately $687,000.

The district is receiving additional revenue through the state’s Evidence-Based Funding Formula. The $18.4 million makes up about 28% of the H-F budget. Real estate taxes raise approximately $37.46 million or 59% of the budget. The district also gets support through grants and federal assistance, corporate personal property replacement taxes and investment income.

The board also approved the application to the state for a $50,000 School Maintenance Project Grant. The funding would help cover the cost of replacing the 35,000-square-foot roof on the South Building cafeteria, Cook said.

The roof replacement is part of the district’s long-range facility plan. The roof was originally laid in 1992 and is showing signs of chronic moisture and deteriorating patch work.  The replacement cost is estimated at $987,000. Work will be done in summer 2023.

Tuition rates

The board increased the annual tuition rate by 5.6% to $19,222.97 per year, or $109.22 per day.

When district staff finds that a student is not a resident of District 233, the student’s parent or guardian is liable for tuition costs for the days the student was at Homewood-Flossmoor High School.
