BOSTON — A woman was rushed to the hospital after a light pole on the bridge she was walking on toppled over and fell on top of her.

The woman was walking on the Evelyn Moakley Bridge in the Seaport when she was struck. According to the Boston Police Department, the woman’s injuries were considered to be non-life threatening.

In a statement, the City of Boston informed Boston 25 that the bridge is closed to bike and pedestrian access while safety officials inspect all the street poles on the structure.

Video from scene showed large signs that with messages that read, “No Pedestrians.”

“The City of Boston prioritizes the safety of its residents and visitors, and out of an abundance of caution, the sidewalks and bike path have been closed and vehicular traffic has been reduced to one lane in each direction. Boston Public Works crews immediately responded and are on scene inspecting the site and evaluating all street poles for safety. These closures will be lifted once the inspection is complete and the area has been deemed safe.”

The ground around the toppled pole appeared to be rusted and damaged.

Crews have since removed a number of other poles from the busy bridge.

An investigation remains ongoing.
