PONTIAC (WWJ) – A 62-year-old Pontiac man has been charged with murder after allegedly stabbing a Waterford man near a Pontiac elementary school last week.

Maurice Rushton is being held without bond at the Oakland County Jail after he was arraigned on one count of open murder on Tuesday.

The charge stems from an alleged attack around 8 p.m. last Thursday on West Huron near Webster Elementary School.

Authorities say 36-year-old Larry James Lewis-Lefler was killed after Rushton allegedly stabbed him once in the chest.

While investigators have not yet determined a motive in the case, the two were seen arguing a short time before the alleged stabbing.

Police officials said Lewis-Lefler tried to run after the attack, but collapsed about 50 yards from the scene. He was taken to a hospital, where he died about six hours later, according to the sheriff’s office.

Rushton was arrested at his home in the 100 block of Monroe Street about 30 minutes after the alleged stabbing.

The sheriff’s office says Rushton has a long criminal past, dating back to 2005, when he was convicted in Wayne County Circuit Court for larceny from a person. Other previous convictions include assault with a dangerous weapon in 2015 and human trafficking resulting in injuries in 2017.

Rushton’s next court date has been set for Oct. 6.
