A well-known Oklahoma City activist, Michael Washington, is now facing charges of neglect and exploitation of an elderly person.
Washington is known by many for speaking out about the Oklahoma County Detention Center (OCDC).
Police were called to the home of the woman he was caring for on July 11. According to the court documents, the home was, "disgusting and in disarray," and the condition of the 94-year-old woman Washington was the caretaker for was even worse.
Washington was arrested Monday, September 26 and is facing charges of abuse, neglect, and exploitation of the 94-year-old woman he was taking care of.
According to court documents, police were called out to the woman's home in July, when Washington refused to let Hospice nurses inside to check on her.
Washington lives in the home with the woman, but she owns it and pays for all the bills herself according to the court documents.
Documents say he also often drives her car and even put a magnet on it for his non-profit business.
When police arrived Washington was "irate and belligerent." Once inside the home, nurses say the woman's vital signs were "dangerously low... and she was malnourished and dehydrated...weighing less than 70 pounds."
Nurses told police when they would visit the home, the air conditioner would be off despite the fact it worked, with temps inside sometimes being over 100 degrees.
They said the high temperatures caused the woman to almost always have a fever, and on one occasion her temperature was near 103 degrees Fahrenheit.
The documents say nurses described the home as cluttered, with a mold and pest infestation. They told police that Washington would leave her home alone with a warm bottle of water that was, "just out of her reach," and often, "only feeding her milk and cookies."
In the documents, nurses said they advised Washington on how to take better care of her, but he failed to do so.
According to the documents, Washington told police he would leave her at home while he ran errands, but he, "made it seem like she did not need constant care."
Doctors disagree, saying in the documents, "She requires constant care and cannot thrive on her own without assistance."
According to the documents, the victim was placed in a facility in July after the incident, and was doing "exceptionally better."
Fox 25 did reach out to Washington but was unable to get a hold of him.
He did make a Facebook post about the incident on August 15, which can be read below.
