EAST COCALICO TWP., Pa. — A fatal crash closed a southbound stretch of Route 222 between Reading and Lancaster for about six hours on Tuesday.

The crash was reported shortly before 3 p.m. on the border between East Cocalico and Ephrata townships in Lancaster County.

Police have not yet released any information about the crash, but a Lancaster County 911 supervisor told 69 News that the coroner was dispatched to the scene.

Images from the scene showed multiple vehicles involved in the crash, including a commercial box truck.

The southbound lanes of the highway were closed at Routes 568/272 in Brecknock Township, Berks County. Drivers were directed to follow Route 272 South until they got past the crash scene.

Debby Hertzog was hoping for an easy drive in Lancaster County Tuesday night, but her 20-minute trip ended up taking an hour.

"It was just jam packed," Hertzog said of the roadway. "I figured there was probably an accident."

"I got the notice that there was an accident and had to redirect myself," said Alfred Baker, Maryland.

Baker says he was trying to make deliveries from Maryland when he was detoured for an extra 15 minutes because of the crash.

Route 222 reopens after fatal crash

Route 222 South was reopened around 9 p.m. Tuesday.

"Pretty much just trying to navigate myself, especially with the sun setting and not knowing when the next turn would be," Baker said.

Route 222 South was reopened around 8 p.m. Tuesday. Crews have not yet released the name of the individual who was killed.
