With so much to check out at the Jersey City Art and Studio Tour this weekend, it’s difficult to plan for what you might want to see during the 32nd annual event.

It might not be possible to see everything that’s going on, but here are 10 shows you probably won’t want to miss as you travel the various city neighborhoods throughout the weekend.

Canopy Jersey City

Mixed media artist Mindy Linkous will unveil her approach to art and life in the context of consumer culture with Feminine Wiles, curated by DK Johnston at Canopy Jersey City.

Linkous’ style and motif are characterized by popular and cultural themes. This latest series by the artist is an homage to the charms of modern-day women, highlights the delight and demise of consumerism and notoriety, and continues her work and collage and mixed media.

Canopy by Hilton is located at 159 Morgan St., Jersey City. Open hours are noon to 9 p.m. on Friday, noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Novado Gallery

Surface Tension at Novado Gallery is a collaboration with Ann Welles of Exhibit A, Corning, NY.

The curated group exhibition features Jackie Pancari (1961-2021), Dan Mirer, Felice Koenig, Melissa Zarem, Samuel Guy, and David Dowler; whose work builds around the idea of bubbles, surface, and tension.

All six artists in this exhibition adeptly employ surfaces, tension, and even the physics of surface tension to create works that engage in various ways.

Novado Gallery is located at 110 Morgan St., in the Powerhouse Arts District.

Curious Matter

Curious Matter “Where is Here” exhibition has reopened post-COVID after a long hiatus and just in time for JCAST.

The collection of work was scheduled to open just as the pandemic forced immediate closures. While Curious Matter continued their annual holiday installations and occasional correspondence, gaps remained in their usual programming.

The exhibit features the works of Enrico Gomez, Emmy Mikelson, and Kirsten Nash. Curious Matter is located at 272 Fifth St., Jersey City. The gallery has been on Fifth Street between Coles and Jersey for more than a decade

Drawing Rooms

Drawing Rooms will have its first major exhibition since shutting down for the pandemic in March, 2020. The JCAST exhibit will be at their newly expanded space at Topps with paintings, assemblages, drawings and prints by New Jersey art-couple Ani Rosskam and Bill Leech.

The exhibit, A Wonderful World, will have its opening reception on Thursday, Sept. 29, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Drawing Rooms is also continuing its Public Art/Prayer Flag Project with two new public art displays for JCAST by Jill Scipione and Norm Franceour as tribute to the Ukraine people and the hope for peace.

Drawing Rooms is located at 926 Newark Ave., #T101, Jersey City. Gallery hours are Thursday and Friday, 4 to 7 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday, 2 to 6 p.m. Masks are required indoors, and wine will be served at Drawing Rooms’ Outdoor Cafe.

Art House Gallery

Art House Gallery will open its doors inside Art House Productions’ new permanent performing and visual arts center on the corner of Bay Street and Marin Boulevard in Downtown Jersey City.

This inaugural exhibit, “Timeless,” showcases work from Jersey City-based artists who have grown with the gallery over the past several years and reflects the self-identity in the artists’ work that endures and speaks directly to Jersey City culture and politics both now and in the past.

Participating artists include Beth Achenbach, Ray Arcadio, Gail-Marie Boykewich, Miguel Cardenas, Bojana Coklyat, Beth DiCara, Teri Fiore, Cheryl Gross, Megan Klim, Robert Koch, Patrick McCoy, Winifred McNeill, Vincent Minervini, Amy Neufeld, Lucy Rovetto, Theda Sandiford, Deb Sinha, and Bryant Small.

The new Art House Gallery is located at 180 Morgan St., entrance on Marin Boulevard, closer to Bay Street, Jersey City. The opening reception for “Timeless” is Friday, Sept. 30, from 7 to 9 p.m. with a capacity for 30 people. The show will also be open on Saturday, Oct. 1, from noon to 3 p.m. and 3 to 6 p.m. with a capacity for 50 people; and Sunday, Oct. 2, from noon to 3 p.m. and 3 to 6 p.m. with a capacity for 50 people.

Greenville Arts Crossroads

Greenville Arts Crossroads at 166 McAdoo Ave. will have a pathway connecting one side of Greenville to the other, allowing people to walk through the neighborhood and take in the works created by their neighbors.

The Greenville Headquarters will be at the intersection of McAdoo and Sterling Avenues on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 3 to 6 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 2, from noon to 4 p.m., where visual artists, poets, musicians are invited to to perform in a talent showcase.

Nimbus Arts Center

The Bridge Art Gallery will be the guest curator for Garden Renaissance at the Firmament Gallery Space at the Nimbus Arts Center.

The Garden Renaissance is a collection of New Jersey-based artists, all with their own innovative approach to visual art. The showcase will feature the art of Anthony Boone, Kortez, Martryce Roach, Philip Robinson, Jr., Theda Sandiford, Danielle Scott, Bryant Small, and xplorefreedom.

The Nimbus Arts Center is located at 329 Warren St., Jersey City. Hours for JCAST are Friday, 3 to 8 p.m.; Saturday, noon to 6 p.m.; and Sunday, 1 to 6 p.m.

Bridge Art Gallery was located in Bayonne, but has moved to Delaware. It agreed to curate the Nimbus show for the JCAST event.

Lemmerman Gallery

The NJCU Lemmerman Gallery will have The Artist’s Way by Andrew Demirjian and James Proctor. An audiovisual navigation through the language of artist statements, The Artist’s Way remixes over 400 artist statements of self-identified digital/electronic artists from a competitive grant application to make a generative three-dimensional poem across this collective of artist minds.

The exhibit has two large-scale artworks that draw on the history of poetic structures to sequencing the 16,000 words featured into a new poem.

An opening reception will take place on Thursday, Sept. 29, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. The NJCU Lemmerman Gallery is located at 2039 Kennedy Blvd., Hepburn Hall, room 323, Jersey City.

Mana Contemporary

Mana Contemporary will have a weekend of open art studios on Saturday, Oct. 1, and Sunday, Oct. 2, from noon to 6 p.m. The open studios also include artists in the Monira Foundation residencies at Mana Contemporary.

St. Lifer Art will also be at Mana Contemporary where it will be exhibiting the works of Will Barnet (1911-2012) at the Fall Open House the same day and time as the open studios.

The exhibition will showcase a painting from the 1950s, the unique drawings of Jane St. Lifer and her late husband Steve Kennedy, serigraphs, etchings, and signed posters. Jane St. Lifer worked with Barnet on a traveling exhibition, “The Complete Collection of Barnet Posters” from 2002 to 2005. She was also a research assistant to his “Will Barnet, Catalogue Raisonne 1931-2005,” published by John Szoke Editions.

Alley Cat Gallery

Alley Cat Gallery returns to JCAST this year as it highlights artists of all ages including photographers, painters, crafters, and more on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1 and 2, from noon to 6 p.m.

Once or twice a year, Alley Cat converts a garage into an art gallery space at 76 Coles St. Alley, between 4th and 5th St., Jersey City.

This year the gallery will be featuring photographer Beth Achenbach, mixed-media artist Christina Alessi, painter Iassene Mahomede, and Wendy Weber, who works with mud and glass pottery.

And to finish up your tour

When it’s all said and done, it’ll be time to kick back and relax with some good live music at the Fox & Crow, which will be hosting a JCAST Blues America After-Party on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 8 to 10 p.m.

The party features a performance by Debra Devi and her band, with Devi on vox/guitar; John Roccesano on drums; Martin Schmid on keys; and Kevin Jones on bass

Devi plays “dreamy blues-rockers and blistering psychedelic jams” (Relix) flavored with a soulful voice and guitar playing.

Her Jamification Station EP has been on the Relix/Jambands.com Top 30 Radio Chart for 3 months, peaking at #5 in August.

There is a suggested donation of $10 for the show. The Fox & Crow is located at 594 Palisade Ave., Jersey City.
