David Alston Gantt, 37, is facing multiple charges after being tracked down by officers and a K9 unit in Charles County following an alleged assault incident in his hometown of Waldorf, authorities announced.
Shortly before 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 26, officers responded to the 11900 block of Acton Lane in Waldorf for a report of shoplifting, though the suspect - later identified as Gantt - fled the area before investigators arrived at the scene.
Shortly after the initial call, officers responded to a robbery at a nearby fast-food restaurant in the 2200 block of Crain Highway, officials said.
In the second incident, a spokesperson from the sheriff’s office said that a suspect reached over the counter, grabbed cash out of an open register, and ran outside.
An employee chased Gantt out of the store, at which point he allegedly threatened to stab the employee before fleeing in an unknown direction.
While officers were canvassing the area of the robbery and assault, another business in the 2200 block of Old Washington Road reported that a person reached over the counter and attempted to take money from the register, assaulting an employee attempting to stop him in the process.
According to the sheriff’s office, officers established a perimeter and a K9 track was conducted. The K9 team was able to track down Gantt and officers were able to take him into custody without incident.
Gantt was charged with:
- Two counts of robbery;
- Two counts of second-degree assault;
- Theft of between $100 and $1,500;
- Possession of drug paraphernalia.
Officials noted that Gantt was also linked to a strong-armed robbery on Sunday, Sept. 25 in a convenience store in the 5100 block of Indian Head Highway in Indian Head. Charges are pending in that incident.
Gantt was ordered by a judge to be held at the Charles County Detention Center on a no-bond status. No return court date has been announced.
