ANNOUNCED LATER AND A REDFIELD MAN WILL SERVE ONE OF THE HARSHEST PRISON SENTENCES OF ANY CAPITOL RIOT FOR ASSAULTING A CAPITOL POLICE OFFICER ON JANUARY SIXTH. KCCI CHIEF INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER JAMES STRATTON IS HERE WITH HOW LONG CARL YOUNG WILL SPEND IN PRISON. AND SCOTT, JUDGE AMY BERMAN, JACKSON SENTENCED KYLE YOUNG TO 1886 MONTHS IN PRISON, A LITTLE MORE THAN SEVEN YEARS. SHE CALLS HIS ACTIONS SOME OF THE MOST SERIOUS IN HER CASEBOOK AND IN THAT FEDERAL COURTHOUSE, SHE SAID HE COMMITTED SOME OF THE DARKEST ACTS ON SOME OF THE DARKEST DAYS. 86 MONTHS. WHAT THE PROSECUTION WANTED, YOUNG’S DEFENSE WANTED HIM TO SPEND NO MORE THAN TWO YEARS IN PRISON. HE’S ALREADY SERVED 17 MONTHS. THAT WILL COUNT TOWARD HIS SENTENCE. ONCE RELEASED, HE MUST SPEND THREE YEARS IN SUPERVISED RELEASE INTO 100 HOURS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE. YOUNG ADDRESSED THE COURT HIMSELF TODAY, APOLOGIZING TO POLICE OFFICERS ON JANUARY 6TH. HE SAID HE IS, QUOTE, VERY ASHAMED OF WHAT HE DID THAT DAY. AND WHATEVER THE JUDGE GIVES HIM AS PUNISHMENT, HE ACCEPTS. WE ALSO HEARD FROM OFFCER MICHAEL FANONE, WHO YOUNG ASSAULTED THAT DAY BY GRABBING HIS WRIST WHILE OTHERS TASED HIM IN THE BACK OF THE NECK. THAT PHOTO FROM FANON’S BODY CAMERA FOR OWN SUGGESTED A TEN YEAR SENTENCE FOR YOUNG, ADDING, QUOTE, WHAT I HOPE YOU DO WITH THAT TIME IS THAT I HOPE YOU SUFFER, END QUOTE. YOUNG IS NOW THE SECOND IOWAN TO BE SENTENCED, BUT FACES ONE OF THE LONGEST SENTENCES

Kyle Young, the Iowan who grabbed Officer Michael Fanone's wrist while another rioter tased him was sentenced to more than seven years in prison Tuesday.Young, 38, of Redfield, pleaded guilty to assaulting, resisting or impeding a police officer back in May.Judge Amy Berman Jackson handed down an 86-month sentence. Young must also serve three years of supervised release.Young has already served 17 months in jail, which will be counted toward his sentence.Prosecutors said Young was part of the mob who dragged Officer Fanone into a crowd.The officer suffered a heart attack after he was beaten and had a stun gun used on him."The assault on me by Mr. Young cost me my career. It cost me my faith in law enforcement and many of the institutions I dedicated two years of my life," Officer Fanone said in court Tuesday.Fanone suggested a 10-year sentence for Young, though prosecutors suggested 86 months."More important from that sentence is what you do with that time Mr. Young. What I hope you do with that time is I hope you suffer," Officer Fanone said.During the sentencing, Jackson described Young's actions on Jan. 6 as "some of the darkest acts committed on some of the darkest days."Jackson added that Young was "trying to stop the singular thing that makes America America, the peaceful transfer of power."Young expressed remorse for his actions."First, I would like to say sorry to all the police officers and their families for my actions that day," Young said. "I am not honored by what I did. It eats me every day."He added, "I am very ashamed."Young said he was ready to accept his sentence."Whatever you give me as punishment, I accept," Young said.
