Kyle Young given one of the harshest Jan. 6 sentences for his role in assaulting police officer
Kyle Young, the Iowan who grabbed Officer Michael Fanone's wrist while another rioter tased him was sentenced to more than seven years in prison Tuesday.
Young, 38, of Redfield, pleaded guilty to assaulting, resisting or impeding a police officer back in May.
Judge Amy Berman Jackson handed down an 86-month sentence. Young must also serve three years of supervised release.
Young has already served 17 months in jail, which will be counted toward his sentence.
Prosecutors said Young was part of the mob who dragged Officer Fanone into a crowd.
The officer suffered a heart attack after he was beaten and had a stun gun used on him.
"The assault on me by Mr. Young cost me my career. It cost me my faith in law enforcement and many of the institutions I dedicated two years of my life," Officer Fanone said in court Tuesday.
Fanone suggested a 10-year sentence for Young, though prosecutors suggested 86 months.
"More important from that sentence is what you do with that time Mr. Young. What I hope you do with that time is I hope you suffer," Officer Fanone said.
During the sentencing, Jackson described Young's actions on Jan. 6 as "some of the darkest acts committed on some of the darkest days."
Jackson added that Young was "trying to stop the singular thing that makes America America, the peaceful transfer of power."
Young expressed remorse for his actions.
"First, I would like to say sorry to all the police officers and their families for my actions that day," Young said. "I am not honored by what I did. It eats me every day."
He added, "I am very ashamed."
Young said he was ready to accept his sentence.
"Whatever you give me as punishment, I accept," Young said.
