BAY VILLAGE, Ohio -- Ward 1 Councilman David Tadych is offering to donate a “script” sign for the city to place in Cahoon Park.

The sign is reminiscent of the script Cleveland signs that sit on a rectangular pedestal and feature the name of that city.

Tadych, who has served on council for 22 years, said he will be donating the cost for the sign that would sit on the north side of Lake Road, near the walking trail in Cahoon Park. It will sit about 200 feet from the road.

The letters on the sign would, tentatively, read “Bay Village” and be set atop a white pedestal about 27 feet long and about 7.5 feet tall. The letters would be a foot deep.

The project was on the City Council agenda Sept. 19 for a resolution on a first reading. The council members didn’t come to a consensus yet, so the resolution will move to a second and, perhaps, even a third reading before it is approved.

As to the cost of the sign, City Council President Dwight Clark said: “We don’t know the cost yet. We have been talking about the project for about a year, and costs have gone up.

“Once the ordinance to accept the donation has passed, it can be sent to their (Signature Sign Company) estimator to submit a cost for the design.”

Then, said Clark, “The sign must be approved by the city park trustees, the mayor and ... the council members.”

Clark said he hopes for a Fourth of July unveiling, while Tadych is aiming for “a nice spring day in early spring.”

Tadych also remarked that he is hoping somebody will donate the cost of a little walkway in front of the actual sign to aid those who are disabled or unable to walk through the grass to reach the sign.

“And the person (who might donate the walkway) should wait until the sign is up and then talk to the city about the donation,” he said.

Added Clark: “The new script Bay Village sign is a fitting and tasteful enhancement for both the residents of and visitors to Bay Village.

“This very generous gift from Councilman David Tadych will serve as a welcoming beacon in Cahoon Park, one which will attract many to our beautiful city.

“This significant donation is yet another positive addition to our lakefront, and its centralized location is ideal. Input on, and support from, the city administration, City Council and Bay’s Planning Commission and our donor will ensure proper sizing, placement and design,” he said.

“The final product will be a welcoming city centerpiece for all to enjoy in the years ahead.”

If the ordinance passes in October, Tadych said, “The brace work, concrete support work and the letters could (maybe) be done in October, assuming for the spring.”

What was the motivation for Tadych to donate the sign?

“Because I love the city I represent,” he said. “Because I have been a councilman for 22 years and I grew up in Avon Lake and moved all the way to Bay. This has been home to me, and I want to give something back to Bay Village.”
