Over its first five years, McEvoy Foundation for the Arts has presented a dozen exhibitions and scores of public programs that draw from the expansive themes and ideas found in the McEvoy Family Collection. These exhibitions have featured collaborations with artists such as Michael Jang, Isaac Julien, Ragnar Kjartansson, Tilda Swinton, and many others.
Color Code marks McEvoy Arts’s fifth anniversary by celebrating color and its vibrant expressions in the arts. Modern and contemporary artworks from the McEvoy Family Collection join four new commissions by Bay Area artists Sadie Barnette, Angela Hennessy, Clare Rojas, and Zio Ziegler to showcase how we bring color into our lives. From the unexpected reds and oranges that give dimension to Wayne Thiebaud’s shadows to the swirl of colors that Petra Cortright sources from the internet as the palette for her digital paintings, the exhibition identifies the wide spectrum of feelings, ideas, and stories that are held within color.
Color Code is accompanied by several related programs. Visible Light, a daily program of short films in McEvoy Arts’s Screening Room, focuses on the relationship between light and color in the moving image. The Fifth Edition is a special anniversary newspaper published by McEvoy Arts to showcase color in the graphic arts, featuring an original essay by arts writer Sarah Thornton. Two workshops hosted by local color specialists illuminate its important role in performance and design and provide attendees with hands-on opportunities to get colorful.
McEvoy Arts is located in the Minnesota Street Project complex in San Francisco’s Dogpatch neighborhood. Admission is free.
