KALAMAZOO, MI -- A man accused of being intoxicated and driving during a crash that seriously injured a Kalamazoo police officer has been bound over for a trial.
Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officer Tom Maher was hit on July 9 while riding his motorcycle to work. He was paralyzed and had part of his leg amputated.
Deymeon Todd, 31, of Parchment is charged with operating while intoxicated causing serious injury.
Todd’s preliminary examination was waived Tuesday, according to court records. That means the case is bound over for a criminal trial.
Todd said he drank at least one beer and several shots of tequila, and smoked a blunt of marijuana, in the hours before he drove home around 6:30 a.m. July 9, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in Kalamazoo County District Court.
Todd was arraigned Aug. 24 in district court on one felony count of operating while intoxicated causing serious injury.
He had a blood alcohol content of .085 according to a breathalyzer test at 6:44 a.m. July 9, and had a BAC of .091 according to a blood draw, the affidavit said.
He was driving from Deja Vu Showgirls strip club, 1336 Ravine Road, to his home in Cooper Township, the affidavit said.
The crash happened on North Riverview Drive, north of East G Avenue. Maher suffered serious injuries, including paralysis, and his left leg was amputated below the knee.
