Syracuse, N.Y. -- Jamesville Dewitt lineman Bryce Dadey has been nominated for an award recognizing his work ethic and off-field character.

Dadey, a sophomore, is a candidate for USA Football’s Heart of a Giant Award. It is presented by the Hospital for Special Surgery and the New York Giants to players, student managers, student mascots or other designated student team members in the Tri-State area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

According to the program’s website, the award honors students involved in football who “demonstrate that extra something special. The ones that have a relentless work ethic and unmatched love for the game.”

USA Football said Dadey was nominated for his character.

“Bryce best demonstrates the value of ‘character’ through his friendship with a peer afflicted with cerebral palsy,” his nomination reads. “Bryce maintains an authentic relationship with this student that is a model for establishing an equitable society. On the football field, Bryce’s motor never stops and he is a relentless and disciplined football player who plays the game the way it was meant to be played.”

Nominations are sent in by coaches, and USA Football chooses six finalists per week for 10 weeks. One nominee with the most online votes will then be chosen each week. Additionally, five more will be selected based on work ethic and character, making for 11 total finalists.

Finalists submit a video to be reviewed for the final round of voting, and all finalists receive a $1,000 equipment grant for their school. USA Football, Hospital for Special Surgery and the New York Giants review all video submissions and select one winner, who receives an additional $10,000 equipment grant and a trophy.
