SALT LAKE CITY — Local elections officials said Utah is likely to see more uniformed officers at polling places as mid-term elections approach.

Utah hasn’t historically had a heavy police presence at polling places. Weber County Clerk, Ricky Hatch said he suspects we might see more uniformed officers or patrol cars given the current political climate.

“Compared to prior years, I suspect that we’re more likely to see officers at polling places, just to help assure the public,” he said.

Each county handles the extent to which they use their law enforcement according to Hatch. He also noted that Weber County recently received a veiled voicemail threat. Additionally, he said Salt Lake County has gotten some as well.

The Weber County Clerk thinks voters will appreciate the police presence given the rise in tensions and threats in the last few years. However, he said it’s important to strike a balance as they never want voters to feel intimidated by uniformed officers.

The mid-term general elections will be held on Nov. 8. For information on the election or to register to vote visit vote.utah.gov.
