COS Athletics

The College of the Sequoias football team (3-1) took the lead with 12:48 in the first quarter and never looked back, defeating Shasta College 51-14.

After the COS defense went three and out on the opening Shasta drive of the game, David Alcantar (Tulare Western) took a punt back 72 yards to give the Giants a 7-0 lead.

COS (3-1) would score the first 44 points of the game before giving up a touchdown with 6:49 to go in the game.

Offensive standouts for the Giants were running back Aiden Galvan (Monache), who rushed for two touchdowns, and quarterback Nate Lamb. The former Tulare Unionstandout hit nine different receivers on the day and went 13-21 passing for 180 yards and two touchdowns.

College of the Sequoias' receiver DeWayne Coleman (Exeter) scores a touchdown against Shasta College on Sept. 24, 2022 in a non-conference game on the Giants' campus.

Julian Espinosa (Tulare Union) and Lonnie Wessel (Golden West) had six and four tackles, respectively. The COS defense held Shasta to just 60 yards rushing and 146 in the air. Linebacker Dorian Felix also took an interception for a touchdown with 11:47 to go in the game to give the Giants their first defensive touchdown of the season.

“I was pleased with the overall effort of everyone," COS head coach Travis Burkett said. "We had many guys contribute. We had nine guys catch a pass, and nine guys record a rush. It was great to get everyone involved. Our defense was ready and they stuck to the plan. I’m just really proud of all of them."

COS travels to Diablo Valley College in Concord,  this Friday at 7 p.m.

In the latest state poll, COS climbed to No. 13 in the state and will take the floor in a home league contest versus Reedley College this Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the COS Porter Field House.

The Giants are coming off a week where they went 1-1, losing to Fresno and capturing a victory versus West Hills-Lemoore with a 3-0 sweep.

COS has been the beneficiary of great defensive play this year led by Jacki Luna (El Diamante), Brook Hatch (Immanuel), and Ashley Barrera (Golden West), who all have over 150 digs on the season to date.

“They are a fun group to coach,” COS head coach Kim Rix said. “They are so coachable. They play hard, and we continue to get better each time out. We just need to take it one match at a time.”

COS hosted an unbeaten squad last Friday in LA City College tying them 2-2.

COS scored in the last few minutes of play to secure the tie.

“What a tough team they were,” COS head coach Renato Bustamante said. “I am proud of the boys for finding a way to get another one in the back of the net when we needed it.”

COS will take the field later in the week on Friday as they host Fresno City College at 3 p.m. on the campus field of COS Visalia.

“We know that the games will only get tougher," Bustamante said. "We have to continue to work hard and not let up."
