YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Police used a stun gun on a suspect after a high-speed chase Tuesday morning.
It started in Brookfield but ended around 11 a.m. in Youngstown.
According to a police report, an officer in Brookfield spotted a vehicle with a fictitious plate and attempted to pull it over on State Route 62, near Roberts Street. The officer reported that the vehicle would not stop, however, and reached speeds of over 100 mph as it continued west down Route 62.
The report states that the chase lasted about 18 minutes and continued into the East Side of Youngstown. The driver lost control of the Pontiac Grand Prix while making a turn onto Guss Avenue from Jacobs Road, and the vehicle got stuck in the mud on the side of the road.
An officer hit the driver, identified as 26-year-old David Dewitt, with a stun gun as he got out of the vehicle and began to run away. The officer then handcuffed and arrested him.
Dewitt told officers that he ran because he had a warrant and did not want to go back to jail, the report stated.
The passenger, a 25-year-old Youngstown woman, was also detained.
The officer reported finding 2 grams of marijuana in the vehicle, as well as a marijuana vape pen in a purse on the floor, which belonged to the passenger, the report stated. The passenger said she tried to get Dewitt to stop but she said he refused.
Police took Dewitt to the Trumbull County Jail on charges of failure to comply, resisting arrest, fictitious plates, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, and for not wearing a seat belt.
The passenger was given a summons for possession of the marijuana vape pen.
Dewitt is scheduled to appear in court Thursday morning for his arraignment.
