Syracuse, N.Y. — Sam Sorenson rushed for 134 yards and two touchdowns in the Homer’s 49-35 win over Chittenango on Friday night. Less than 24 hours later, the two-time defending state champion wrestler was wrestling in the Elite 8 Duals in College Park, Georgia.
“We drove to Rochester right after the football game. Got to Rochester at like 11:30,” Sorenson said. “We stayed at one of my dad’s buddy’s in Rochester and then we flew out at 6 the next morning and got down to Atlanta at like 8:00 and weighed in at like 8:30.”
The Elite 8 Duals is an exclusive tournament made up of 12 teams that feature the top wrestlers from all around the country. Sorenson’s team did not place, but he turned in a great performance.
Sorenson competed in five matches and won all five. He picked up wins against the two-time Missouri state medalist Sam Murphy, the New York State runner-up Trent Sibble, the 2022 Tennessee state-runner-up Devon Medina and the 2022 Alabama third-place finisher Desmond Nesbitt.
While Sorenson stars on both the gridiron and the mat, the 2021 All-CNY running back says his future is in wrestling. Sorenson says he will wrestle in college and is currently weighing his decision on which school he will attend. Schools that he is interested in include West Point and Binghamton.
Sorenson returns to the football field this Friday when the undefeated Trojans (3-0) host ITC (1-3).
