Tragedy in Fresno as Teen Mom and Newborn Baby Fatally Shot Inside Their Home

Fresno police announced that a teen mom and her newborn baby were found dead from gunshot wounds in a southwest Fresno home on Saturday morning, September 24.

Cops received a call of a shooting at a residence on the 2500 block of South Fruit Avenue, north of Jensen Avenue, at around 7:20 a.m, Fresno Bee reported. Family members heard shots fired inside the home, located in the middle of an orchard and fairly isolated.

Officers said they tragically learned on their arrival that two people died from gunshot wounds inside the home. When asked if there was any information about the suspect in the shooting, Fresno Deputy Police Chief Burke Farrah said they would not release details at this time.

Investigation still ongoing for Fresno shooting

Fresno cops did not immediately know how many people were living in the home or if there was a disturbance before the shooting of the mother and child. Farrah noted that is part of the detectives' investigation, which will be lengthy. He said that when something like this happens, they must be cautious to ensure they get it right.

Farrah said a homicide investigation team remained at the crime scene on Saturday afternoon. The investigators collected evidence in consultation with the Fresno County Coroner's Office. They are canvasing the area not only for evidence but also witnesses.

According to Action News, mom Yanelly Solorio-Rivera and her baby Celine Sophia Solorio-Rivera were found dead in the Fresno home. Farrah said there is much work to be done on this case. He described the shooting as an unfortunate and tragic event.

The homicide total in Fresno for this year is now at 45

He said they were working with the family and had the Fresno Police Department Chaplaincy on the scene. He added that they also worked with their officers because this situation was traumatic for everyone involved.

Investigators made it clear that this was an isolated incident and did not anticipate any danger to the community or neighborhood. According to Farrah, wellness officers and police chaplains were also sent to the scene to assist the victims' families. Emergency responders will also be given peer counseling and support to help them process the horrific crime.

The deaths of the mother and baby brought the homicide total in Fresno to 45 this year. The mom-and-child deaths follow two other Fresno homicides committed earlier in the day. A fatal stabbing was witnessed in downtown Fresno. A man was also found dead of trauma to his body in the Tower District area. Following those homicides, a man was critically injured in a shooting outside a Home Depot in southeast Fresno.
