Vehicle hits, kills man in motorized wheelchair

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Update Thursday: The Wichita Police Department (WPD) said a man who was struck by a driver while riding in a motorized wheelchair died from his injuries. Police identified the man as 68-year-old Charlie Jones of Wichita.

Police said around 7:30 a.m., officers responded to an injury accident at Broadway and MacArthur involving a vehicle and pedestrian. Officers arrived on the scene and located Jones with injuries to his upper body. Jones was taken to the hospital where he died.

Police said the investigation revealed Jones was traveling northbound on Broadway in a motorized wheelchair when he was struck by a black 2011 Ford F-150 traveling eastbound on MacArthur.

The investigation is ongoing. Neither speed nor alcohol is believed to be a factor.

One person has suffered critical injuries in a vehicle vs. pedestrian collision at Broadway and MacArthur Tuesday morning.

The crash happened at around 7:30 a.m. Eastbound and northbound lanes at the intersection were shut down as authorities responded to the scene. The pedestrian was riding an electronic powerchair.
