Miami-Dade, FL - South Florida residents living in flood-prone areas are preparing for Hurricane Ian by filling up sandbags in case of heavy rainfall.

Despite Hurricane Ian not impacting South Florida directly, residents are stocking up on sandbags across Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

South Florida resident Richard Neederman tells 7 News "I’m concerned about water. I am just happy I have the strength to do it. I usually take pillowcases and fill them with sand.”

Neederman has cause for concern. Officials say inches of rainfall are expected across the area on top of king tides.

According to the NOAA, king tides are "popular, non-scientific term people often use to describe exceptionally high tides that occur during a new or full moon."

Those living in flood-prone areas are urged to take the necessary precautions.

Some locations may require residents to bring their own shovels and bags.
