Central Falls police ID man arrested after hours-long standoff

CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (WPRI) — A man is facing felony charges after an hours-long standoff in Central Falls on Monday.

Officers were called to 106 Tremont Street around 4:30 p.m. for a report of a woman who was being held against her will. Upon arrival, three women fled from the back of the home and officers then attempted to get in contact with the man inside, identified Tuesday as 34-year-old Michael Mogayzel.

One of the women was Mogayzel’s girlfriend, police said, while the other two were in a separate part of the home and were not involved.

According to police, Mogayzel made threats to harm himself and officers if police came in to get him, saying “he was not going back to jail and that he would create harm to officers as well as anybody else.”

Police set up a perimeter and told people in the surrounding homes to evacuate as they tried to get Mogayzel to surrender.

Based on Mogayzel’s criminal record, which includes firearms and domestic charges, Central Falls police requested assistance from the Rhode Island State Police Tactical Team.

Neighbors told 12 News they saw officers in ballistic vests with their guns drawn and heard them attempting to make contact with Mogayzel over a loudspeaker.

Hours later, police say Mogayzel agreed to come out of the home with his hands behind his head around 10:45 p.m. and was taken into custody.

Mogayzel is charged with domestic kidnapping, domestic sexual assault, domestic simple assault, failure to relinquish a telephone with damage, obstructing officers, and disorderly conduct.
