SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Through four weeks of the season, Syracuse football has lost four starters to season-ending injuries.

Defensive lineman Terry Lockett is the most recent addition to that list, SU coach Dino Babers confirmed Monday. Lockett left Friday’s 22-20 win over Virginia in the third quarter and spent the rest of the game on the sideline on crutches.

Lockett is a Springfield native who attended Central High School.

Kevon Darton, who was put on scholarship in August ahead of his fourth season with the program, will likely see more reps with Lockett out.

SU lost linebacker Stefon Thompson and fullback Chris Elmore in Week 1. It lost wide receiver Isaiah Jones in the final seconds of the Purdue win on Sept. 17.

Now it has lost Lockett, who’d been a key contributor on the defensive line through the first four games.

“We’re averaging losing a starter per game,” Babers said. “Backups who are now starters have done a really, really good job based off the people we’re playing, but starting with this week, if we’re gonna continue losing one a game, I don’t know how that’s gonna look. I don’t know how that crystal ball looks in the end.

“So am I concerned? Yes, but the train’s left. We can’t put anybody else on it.”

A number of other defensive players for the Orange left Friday’s game early or were unavailable entirely, including safety Ja’Had Carter, safety Alijah Clark and linebacker Derek McDonald.

Babers said he would not know any more about their statuses for Saturday’s game against Wagner until later in the week.

The team had not released its Week 5 depth chart as of Monday afternoon.
