Good morning, Chicago.

Two informal memorials created to remember victims of the Fourth of July mass shootings in Highland Park could soon be moved from their prominent downtown locations if City Council members agree with a staff recommendation.

One memorial, consisting of stuffed animals, flowers and written remembrances, grew at the base of the veterans’ monument at the corner of St. Johns and Central avenues. The other, a vibrant, crowd-built art installation meant to spur action to prevent gun violence, took shape at the pavilion across the street.

Though they have drawn sizable crowds and been praised as centers of comfort and unity, they have also proven controversial.

Man shot after climbing through Chicago police building fire escape into SWAT training, turning police guns on them, top cop says

A man climbed five flights up a fire escape of the Chicago Police Department’s Homan Square facility at midday Monday and found himself in the middle of SWAT training for officers, Chicago police Superintendent David Brown said at a news conference.

At least one officer shot and injured the man after he picked up at least two guns that were lying on a table as part of the training and pointed them at officers, Brown said. An officer was also injured with a sprained ankle during the encounter.

50 years ago, two Loop-bound trains crashed, killing 45 and injuring more than 300. Survivors don’t want people to forget.

In 1972, an older six-car train and a more modern four-car one collided at 7:27 a.m. in a crash that killed 45 people and injured 332 others. News accounts described a scene of screaming passengers, mangled bodies and people staggering out of the wreck.

Decades later, survivors interviewed by the Tribune describe a life lived in the shadow of the crash. They don’t want Chicago to forget.

Meet the Illinois youth taking sex education curriculum into their own hands with their handbook

Northbrook resident Irene Sooah Park remembers educators and other adults treating sex education as something that should never be talked about outside the classroom. After experiencing a number of similar interactions, Park founded the Sex Ed Initiative in winter 2021 — a youth-led group centered on showing people sex education is not scary.

SEI director Park and fellow SEI members IMSA senior and Canton, Ill., native Sarah Wheeler and Catherine Tang, a senior at Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook, spent the last several months researching, writing, and producing the handbook, “Shattering the Taboo: A Guide to Sexual Health Education.”

‘Mrs. Hering’ found: More than Walnut Room’s historic pot pie behind the real Mrs. Haring in Chicago

Who was Mrs. Hering? We’ve long been told she was the woman who created the famous chicken pot pie at the historic Walnut Room in the store formerly known as Marshall Field’s, and now Macy’s, on State Street in Chicago. Legend has it that Hering was a hat salesperson who first shared her homemade lunch with a hungry customer at the store, launching a secret lunchroom that inspired Marshall Field to open restaurants to huge success.

Earlier this year, Louisa Chu went in search of the real woman behind what may be the oldest known restaurant recipe in the city, dating to 1890. Recently, Chu discovered records that reveal Mrs. Hering was not the woman we thought she was.
