WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - After making a devastating landfall as a major hurricane on Florida’s west coast, a weaker but still quite potent version of Ian has made another landfall near Cape Romain and McClellanville, South Carolina early Friday afternoon. Ian, now a Post-Tropical Cyclone, will continue to bring significant impacts to the Cape Fear Region through Friday evening as its center swirls and uncoils deeper into the Carolinas. Your First Alert Weather Team continues a First Alert Action Day for Friday, September 30.

Timing & Impacts: Expect widespread, locally heavy showers to continue to flow into the Cape Fear Region before tapering by Friday night. Several inches of rain are probable and, despite recent dryness, localized poor-drainage flooding is possible. Some rain bands may graduate into strong, gusty storms with stray waterspouts and / or spin-up tornadoes until Friday evening. Background winds, in any case, will continue to occasionally gust 40+ mph - mainly from the east and south. Rough seas, heavy surf, and rip currents are likely and, though the lunar cycle would tend to minimize coastal flooding, minor tidal flooding is probable and a minor to moderate storm surge is possible.

Our Promise & Your Action: Your First Alert Weather Team will continue to monitor Ian and its impacts, even as the storm ultimately decays. Look for updates and, potentially, National Weather Service bulletins on all First Alert Weather platforms - especially your WECT Weather App. Set your app to follow your location in case the National Weather Service issues a Tornado Warning for your neighborhood and you have to take quick action. Keep loose items on your property secured, especially small ones like patio plants. Budget extra travel time for reduced visibility and roadway ponding in times of heavy rain.
