(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A south suburban woman is celebrating a milestone birthday at the end of the week, and the whole town is celebrating.

Mary Cantway was born Sept. 30,1914. To put things in perspective, World War I had been raging for two months.

She has lived in the same house in south suburban Homewood since 1957. Local officials are organizing a birthday-card drive for Cantway, and the mayor will drop them off at her home on Friday, the woman’s 108th birthday.

Homewood Communications Specialist Antonia Urbanski says the birthday is a big deal to everyone but Mary Cantway.

“Everyone’s like, ‘Oh, my gosh, 108 — that’s insane, that’s crazy.’ And she’s just like, ‘Yeah, okay.’ It’s just another birthday. Literally that’s what she told me.”

Urbanski says Cantway has been interviewed by local historians.
