Dan O’Connor helps lift WTA past SICS

Westfield Technical Academy 23, Springfield International Charter School 1

Westfield Tech stayed unbeaten by downing a very young SICS team at East Mountain.

Dan O’Connor was the low Tiger with a 42, followed by Deven Werbiskis’s 44. Both golfers swept their matches.

Cyler Sgroi, Tommy Knapik, and Ella Werbiskis also swept their matches and played well for Westfield Tech. Tigers’ Andrew Reed also won by a score of 3-1 in his match.

“We are really playing well right now, top to bottom,” Westfield Technical Academy golf coach Bob Eak said. “We are still very young (1 junior, 8 sophomores, 3 freshmen) but are practicing and competing like experienced veterans.”

Westfield Tech improved to 6-0 in the Bi-County West and 7-0 overall.

“With half the season to go, I look forward to seeing how far this team can take themselves,” coach Eak said.

Westfield Tech’s next opponent is St. Mary’s (Sept. 27). After that, Tigers’ Ella Werbiskis will represent her team at the Western Massachusetts girls golf tournament in Agawam. Then, on Thursday, Tigers’ Deven Werbiskis and Dan O’Connor will compete in the Pioneer Valley Interscholastic Athletic Conference two-ball tournament in Chicopee.

Gavin Connors leads Saints past Pioneers

Gavin Connors bested the field by at least five strokes, finishing with a 6-over-par 41 to lead St. Mary’s past Pathfinder. The Saints improved to 3-5.

Cardinals overwhelm Rams

Pope Francis 160, Southwick 182

Pope Francis’s Zachary Buffone and Ryan O’Leary each shot a match-best 39 on the par-36 at Edgewood. Cardinals’ Rocco Pericoksi and Michael McGrath both shot a 41.

BOYS SOCCER

Generals rally to tie Bombers

Westfield 2, Pittsfield 2

Pittsfield rallied from a two-goal deficit with a pair of second-half goals to escape with a tie against Westfield.

Westfield scored both of its goals in the final 10 minutes of the first half. Jonathan Bulan gave the Bombers a 1-0 lead with a goal off a corner kick from Jeremy Edelson near the 30-minute mark. With about a minute to go in the half, Edelson set up a Michael Liquori goal to make it 2-0.

Two minutes into the second half, Kyle Cardoso cut Pittsfield’s deficit to 2-1. Kasey Miranda assisted. Cardoso headed in the equalizer off a corner kick from Miranda with 15 minutes remaining.

Westfield goalie Bryan Seymour made six saves. Pittsfield keeper Will Kinne finished with 10.

GIRLS SOCCER

Emma Goodreau nets hat trick in Saints’ win

St. Mary’s 6, Greenfield 2

Emma Goodreau tallied a hat trick and three others (Aiden Levesque, Maddie Thierrien, Macy Woodger) netted one goal apiece to lift St. Mary’s. Levesque, Brooke Hockenberry, Kailyn Cabrini, and Lauren Darwick each had an assist.

“Despite teams knowing she is the go-to person up front, Emma continued to dazzle each game with multiple goals,” St. Mary’s coach Patrick Olearcek said.

St. Mary’s goalie Amelia Willenborg was stout in net as she was busy saving 19 shots.

“Amelia is such a rock in the net,” Olearcek said. “We know we are going to get fantastic keeper play each game.”

Olearcek said Thierrien, Hockenberry, and Darwick each contributed much-needed points, and that Woodger and Cabrini continued to make key runs to take the pressure off the newer girls up front.

“It was a good win overall for us today as we continue to be bit by the injury bug and down a bunch of players,” St. Mary’s coach Patrick Olearcek said. “The girls are rallying around one another and the less experienced girls are stepping up to try and keep the momentum going.”

St. Mary’s improved to 4-1.
