CHESTERTOWN — Shenandoah closed out the game Saturday with two unanswered goals in the final five minutes to upend host Washington, 5-4, in non-conference field hockey action and improve to 8-0.
Graduate student Kelsey Jones knocked in a rebound of her own shot in the 55th minute to level the score at 4-all.
Two minutes later, junior Cassidy Morrison netted what held up to be the game-winner. Freshman Mackenzie Watkins was credited with the assist, gathering in a rebound and then dishing off to Morrison.
Neither team got off a shot after that.
It was back and forth with Washington leading at 1-0, 2-1, 3-2 and 4-3.
Sophomore forward Kat Esposito and senior defender Tatum Schatt each scored twice for the Shore ladies, who slipped to 3-4 after dropping their third game in a row.
They were outshot, 25-12.
Esposito put Washington on the board in the fifth minute. She carried the ball into the right side of the circle and put a shot on cage from 7 yards out. When Hornets’ keeper Taylor Swann (Crisfield High School) tried to kick away the ball, it trickled through her legs and into the back of the net.
Unbeaten Shenandoah answered less than a minute later, capitalizing on a penalty corner. Ava Rivera (eight saves) made an initial stop on Farren Winter’s drive from the top left of the circle, but the ball bounced right in front of Claudia Lenahan, who tapped in the equalizer.
Esposito netted her team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 22nd minute when she collected the ricochet of freshman Jam Hutt-Robles’ shot from 30 yards out and beat Swann (seven saves), who had fallen to the ground.
The visiting team pulled even at 2-2 with about a minute and a half remaining before intermission when Morrison tipped in a pass from Mairead Mckibbin along the back post.
Schatt’s penalty stroke in the 39th minute — her first career point — restored Washington’s lead.
Again, Shenandoah responded in quick order — just 42 seconds later — when All-American Jones sent a blast past Rivera from the top of the circle following a penalty corner insert by freshman Madison Short.
Washington was awarded a second stroke in the 48th minute, and again Schatt converted.
Jones’ second goal of the afternoon, also off a penalty corner, tied it up at 4-4. Her initial shot was blocked at the top of the circle, but her follow-up shot from about 10 yards out found the back of the net.
Shenandoah scored what held up to be the winning goal with 3 minutes, 21 seconds remaining when Morrison stuffed in a rebound off an initial shot taken by Watkins from point blank range.
