FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. (WSVN) - Police took a boy who was found wandering alone in Fort Lauderdale back to his home, and they said his family will not face criminal charges at this time.

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department received a call from a passerby regarding a small child who appeared to be walking alone.

The child, described by police as a 9-year-old boy with special needs, was found around at 7:30 a.m. on Monday.

Officers responded and were with the child in the area of Northeast Third Avenue and Northeast Sixth Street.

The boy was wearing a gray tank top, blue underwear and no shoes.

Officers were able to take the child back to their residence, not far from where he was found.

Detectives spoke with the boy’s family at length. They determined this was an isolated incident and criminal negligence does not appear to be a factor.

Investigators with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Child Protective Investigations Section also responded to the home and will be following up with the family.
