Flames engulf Chesapeake warehouse

The department tweeted photos of the fire, showing heavy flames coming from the building.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Flames engulfed a warehouse in Chesapeake Monday evening.

According to the Chesapeake Fire Dept., Airgas National Welders, in the 4300 of Bainbridge Boulevard, caught on fire at 7 p.m.

The department tweeted photos of the fire, showing heavy flames coming from the building.

Chesapeake Fire Lt. Robert Warren said people driving past the business on Bainbridge Boulevard called 911 when they saw flames shooting out of the roof of the building.

There is not much left to the business. The roof is torn off and the pillars stand charred from the flames.

Lt. Warren said this business stocks gas cylinders, which crews monitored when fighting the flames.

"They have a large quantity of compress gas cylinders on scene. They have a lot of inert gas, but they have flammable gas," said Warren. "Luckily, we didn't have that many problems with the cylinders themselves. It was mainly the office area that appears to be the main area of damage."

The fire department said the business was closed at the time and no one was hurt.

A spokesperson with the department said it was under control just before 8 p.m.

The cause of the fire is still unknown. Chesapeake's Fire Marshal is on scene investigating where it originated and how.

Our 13News Now crew found one of the managers of the business on the scene. He told us he could not speak on behalf of the business, due to company policy.
