Man surrenders after standoff in Central Falls

CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (WPRI) — Residents in a Central Falls neighborhood were forced from their homes Monday evening as officers engaged in an hours-long standoff.

Flor Rivera tells 12 News she was evacuated from her Tremont Street home as officers attempted to negotiate with the suspect, who was barricaded inside the house next door.

Rivera said she saw officers in ballistic vests with their guns drawn and heard them attempting to make contact with the suspect over a loudspeaker.

The vast majority of Tremont Street was blocked off by crime scene tape and police cruisers for several hours.

The standoff ended after a man walked out the front door with his hands behind his head.

The man has not yet been identified, and it’s unclear what led up to the standoff.

Police plan to release more information regarding what happened Tuesday morning.
