NYPD to Staten Islanders: Don’t fall victim to check-cashing scam

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The NYPD is warning Staten Islanders to avoid falling victim to a check-cashing scam.

A tweet from the 122nd Precinct said individuals are approaching victims on the street, asking for help in cashing a check.

From there, the individual and victim go together to a nearby bank where the victim deposits the check into an ATM, withdraws the cash and willingly hands it over to the suspect.

Unfortunately, the victim is later notified by the bank that the check they deposited is fraudulent and their bank account is now showing a negative balance.

The tweet goes on to say that anyone finding themselves in such a situation should avoid all interaction with any individuals asking for check-cashing assistance and immediately call 911 with a detailed description of the individual and their location.
