After 40 years, James Krauseneck was found guilty of murdering his wife with an ax on Monday.
The murder left an indelible story on the neighborhood where it took place.
13WHAM returned to Del Rio Drive and spoke with a supreme court justice who was called to the crime scene that night in 1982, as an attorney and a neighbor who says the murder has not been forgotten.
For over four decades the home has been known as the scene of one of our communities most talked about crimes.
Even people who've moved into the neighborhood since then know the story.
"Anytime you hear that there has been an ax murderer, you know at your neighbor's house, however long ago, I mean it is you know it is scary its unnerving. Especially in a town like this," neighbor Haywood Hawks said.
The Krauseneck's bought the home in September of 1981, just six months prior to the murder.
John Ark was one of the attorneys at the time.
"I was a lawyer at the time, and also a town judge, and the Krauseneck's had bought the house from my client. So, from the day that the Krauseneck's moved to Brighton until today, I have been very aware of the situation and the circumstances," Ark said.
Because Ark was a Brighton Town Judge at the time, he was summoned to the murder scene. He's been following the case ever since but wasn't allowed to follow this month's trial.
"Certainly, as a judge whatever the verdict the jurors are always right. This is the kind of case that the jury should have. It is 12 people sitting there hearing the facts fairly presented and they draw the conclusion that they did so," he said.
The guilty verdict might be the final chapter in this 40 year old case that out a quiet Brighton neighborhood into the national spotlight. However, the defense says it plans to appeal.
