The Buccaneers chose to keep Scotty Miller rather than a number of other receivers. This decision was a big mistake with hindsight.

Scotty Miller turned into a battleground player for Buccaneers fans during the offseason and the preseason. Everyone seemed to have a different take on Miller.

Some argued that he should stay on the roster due to his connection with Tom Brady and his clutch moments in big games. Others, such as this site, did not believe that he did enough with his skillset to warrant staying on the roster, especially with a poor training camp performance.

The only voice that matters in the end is the team’s, but that doesn’t mean that the team will always make the right decision.

The Buccaneers decided to move on from guys like Tyler Johnson and Deven Thompkins in favor of Miller despite the constant drops from Miller and the fact that the other two receivers outplayed him when it mattered.

Tyler Johnson is a more complete receiver than Miller. Argue with a wall.

Now that we’ve lost the ardent Johnson haters that are already done reading this and have moved to the comment section to talk about how soft he was, how he never made catches, or that he is stuck on the practice squad with the Texans, let’s talk about what Miller has actually done with so many opportunities in his current role.

Miller was not active in the first game. He has four receptions through the next two games on a staggering 13 targets with an impossibly-bad catch rate of 30.8%.

To further the confusion with Miller, he has only played five special teams reps; a very small number for a player that was retained due to special teams usage potential.

The entirety of this situation is a mess, and every week is just showing more and more than the Bucs made the wrong decision in keeping Scotty Miller over several other options.
