NJ woman, 68, found dead by firefighters putting out blaze in her home

SOMERVILLE, N.J. (1010 WINS) — An investigation is underway after a 68-year-old woman was found dead by firefighters responding to a small fire at her New Jersey home Sunday.

Around 6:42 a.m., firefighters were called to a home on West Cliff Street in Somerville with a report of smoke, Somerset County Prosecutor's Office said.

When they arrived at the single-family home, firefighters saw a small fire at the rear of the first floor in the basement and quickly extinguished it, officials said.

Inside of the home, firefighters found a woman unresponsive and attempted life saving measures until emergency workers arrived, according to authorities.

The woman was eventually pronounced dead at the scene. The cause and origin of the fire is still under investigation as is the woman’s cause of death.
