Woman suffers life-threatening injury in shooting; Alstead man charged
An Alstead man was arrested Monday after a woman suffered life-threatening injuries in a shooting the night before.
New Hampshire State Police said Jeremy Fitzgerald, 44, was charged with first-degree assault with a deadly weapon.
Police said they were called Sunday night to a home on MacLean Road in Alstead for a report of a person who suffered a serious gunshot wound.
"We were assisted by several local agencies-- the Alstead Police Department, the Walpole Police Department and the Bellows Falls, Vermont, Police Department," said New Hampshire State Police Lt. Mike Kokoski. "All responded, given the tremendous concern over the safety of the involved persons."
A 39-year-old woman was taken to Cheshire Medical Center in Keene and later transferred to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
"The victim remains in very serious condition," Kokoski said.
Investigators said two juveniles were also in the home when they arrived.
"I can't say anything about the two juveniles involved other than to say they were not harmed in this incident," Kokoski said. "They were quickly accounted for and, thankfully, were safe."
Police said the investigation is ongoing, and police are turning to the public for help.
"We encourage anybody who thinks they have information related to this incident, whether it was something they saw or heard, we ask that they reach out to the state police," Kokoski said.
Few other details have been released, including a possible motive for the shooting.
Fitzgerald is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday. in Cheshire County Superior Court.
