Elk Run cross country redux

For a few fortunate teams, Crested Butte was the place to be on Saturday. The elevation may have bit a tad on the side of high, but the views and cool fall air likely more than made up for it.

Things developed into a fairly tight battle at the top of the girls' standings with Heritage taking the win, but Fruita Monument, Gunnison, and Basalt each finished within 16 points of Heritage.  Given that it was a 13-team field, that's a fairly tight cluster at the top, and one that included two 3A teams. The meet used a score-4 arrangement, which helped Gunnison and Basalt to keep pace with the much larger schools (both 5A) ahead of them.

Of note, both Katelyn Maley and Ava Lane ran for Basalt and finished in the customary 1-2 slots for the Longhorns. Maley and Lane finished 1-3 in the individual standings, but the surprise there was that Gunnison's Madelyn Stice broke up the Basalt party at the front with an 18:55 clocking for second place. That may adjust a few 3A calculations going forward.
