Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) was in Minnesota on Monday, spreading awareness for an issue that she says is becoming a growing problem: distracted driving.

As offices have reopened and more people are back on the roads heading into work, Klobuchar says that drivers not paying attention while behind the wheel have gotten worse.

Klobuchar shared that life can be changed or lost in an instant if a person prioritizes something other than the road while driving.

“Five seconds. Five seconds on a highway is the same as driving across a football field at 55 miles per hour,” the senator said. “It’s how long it can take to lose a loved one to distracted driving.”

Klobuchar says solving the problem is going to take education, enforcement, and legislative action.

Nationwide, eight people die every day in a distracted driving crash.
