SPRINGFIELD — Some of the roles Springfield hopes to fill through its new hiring event, “Walk in Wednesdays,” include bus drivers, groundskeepers, on-call reference librarians — even a dentist.

During the month of October, the city’s Human Resources Department will hold open interviews every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to allow job seekers to explore the opportunities within the city.

“We are open to discuss any available position,” said Caitlyn Julius, Springfield’s assistant human resources director. “We are going to discuss our current open positions, such as the ones in our Library Department, Health Department and Police Department.”

She added, “We’re also going to speak about our roles that we do commonly hire for that may not be open right now but might and will open up in the future. They will be able to sign up for our employment interest cards in order to be updated about new opportunities.”

Prior to this hiring initiative, Julius said the city held open houses for the city’s Police and Fire Departments and attended local career fairs.

According to Julius, the third largest city in the state has between 10 and 20 job openings available at any given time and plans to make them available to the public each week before Walk-In Wednesdays.

Springfield employs more than 6,000 people, according to its website.

“The reason for open positions vary,” Julius said. “We have new positions that have been developed, or have people who are retiring.”

She added, “If you are a full-time employee, we offer paid vacation, sick time and have partnered with Springfield College to offer assistance for people who are going for their bachelor’s or master’s degrees.”

The city offers higher-level employment opportunities as well. It is looking for a physician, a position that pays almost $169,000 a year and a deputy director of real estate development, which has a salary of more than $91,000.

Residents interested in working for the city’s Office of Housing can apply for the administrative assistant position, where they will assist in court-related work, provide administrative support for city officials and conduct legal research.

Seasonal roles, such as a Laborer for Forest Park’s annual holiday drive-through event Bright Nights, who earn $14.25 per hour, is available through the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.

Anyone with a bachelor’s degree who wants to work in education can apply for a part-time employment as an Adult Reading Substitute Teacher at Springfield’s Central Library to improve their literacy, language, and math abilities. The job pays $26.44 per hour.

Other full-time, part-time and seasonal positions can be reviewed online and at the city’s human resources department.

Residents from other towns may apply, but must relocate to Springfield within a year of their hiring date.

“The city has a residency requirement,” Julius said. “We require employees of the city to be residents.”

Human Resources and Labor Relations Director Attorney William Mahoney encourages the public to participate the hiring event.

“The city is a is a fantastic employer,” Mahoney said. “We have a variety of positions which would interest many people and we want to make sure that the citizens of Springfield are aware of what we have to offer and how easy it is to apply for a city job. We’re excited about this.”

Mahoney, announced this hiring initiative alongside Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer Judi Crowell. Springfield made the announcement on Sept. 20.

The first Walk-in Wednesday event commence on Oct. 5.
