Alberto Polanco, 20, of Roxbury, is charged in the alleged attack just after 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25, the Boston Police Department said

The officer was in his unmarked patrol car at 43 Waumbeck Street near Trotter Elementary School when police say Polanco walked over and started firing. He then ran away, authorities said. The officer wasn't injured in the shooting, and he did not return fire, officials said.

The officer was shot twice, but he gave responding police a description of the shooter and which way he ran off. They arrested Polanco nearby.

Officials charged Polanco with assault with a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, police said.

“... This is another example of some of the bravery that our officers meet every single day in the challenges of doing police work. I am so happy that the officer wasn’t hurt,” said Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox during a press conference. “I just want to thank him for his bravery, for his calmness, and just overall terrific professionalism in the face of this kind of danger.”
