PEORIA, Ill. — Peoria’s YMCA will soon be reaching out even further to the community with “Y On The Fly”.
The YMCA teamed up with Peoria Park District and the Riverplex last year, bringing it’s programs into the downtown Peoria area.
“We’re going to take programs and services out into the community to folks that can’t get to the YMCA,” Executive Director Andy Thornton says.
Thornton tells WMBD’s “The Greg and Dan Show”, “Y On The Fly” will target residents of Peoria’s most underserved areas in zip codes 03, 04 and 05, since it’s difficult for many of them to get to the Y.
Thornton says the focus will be on seniors and kids.
“It’s going to be fitness programming, especially for seniors, fall prevention type stuff that’s relevant to their needs, nutritional programming, helping with dietary needs and actually providing food,” Thornton says.
Peoria’s YMCA hopes to raise $25,000 in 2023 to get the program up and running.
Thornton says goals for “Y On The Fly” next year include making a minimum of 90 stops across six locations to serve 2,500 children and 900 seniors.
Again, geographical areas of focus for the program will be 61603, 61604 and 61605 zip codes of Peoria.
