Mackenzie Dern has conquered her early career weight troubles.

Mackenzie Dern is one of the fastest-rising stars in women’s MMA right now. The former multi-time BJJ champion made the transition to MMA in 2016 and was signed to the UFC in 2018. There were some bumps in the road to overcome along the way but now she is sitting in the number five in the strawweight rankings and very close to a possible title shot.

During her early days in MMA, Dern had some trouble cutting weight. She missed three times in her professional career but has since gotten it under control. Although fans like to throw past failed cuts in her face at times, there is no denying that she has gotten her health and physique under control and has made weight successfully at 115 pounds seven times in a row. Dern spoke with Shakiel Mahjouri on his Shak MMA YouTube page about how she was able to remedy this.

Mackenzie Dern has been working hard to gain muscle to make her weight cuts easier

“I’m so comfortable right now,” she explained. “It’s just my goal is just, like right now I’m really just working on getting muscle mass. So I’ve been with my strength training coach Rogerio Camoes for two years now. So it’s just it’s a long process, you know, just putting on muscle, putting on muscle. But I definitely feel I’m getting there, you know, I want to eventually be like, in a spot where maybe I can feel comfortable at 125 If I wanted to, you know, so it’s just like, thinking ahead, you know, okay, five years from now, something like that. But yeah, I mean, I’m in a really good moment in my career.”

Dern is by far not the only fighter to miss weigh multiple times or by a large margin. Recently Aspen Ladd missed weight for her canceled bout with Sara McMann at UFC Vegas 60, it was her third failure but has had multiple cases of difficult cuts. Also, Khamzat Chimaev missed weight a few weeks ago as well. He missed by nearly eight pounds for his UFC 279 bout against Nate Diaz. Dern jokingly said that perhaps this slipup by Chimaev will take the heat off her past mistakes.

“But hey, I mean, I just after seeing Chimaev not make weight more than mine I was kind of like, okay, that beat my record,” she said. “I’m hoping that people will talk about that and just forget about mine.”

Dern will be taking on Yan Xiaonan on Oct. 1 in a strawweight main event bout. Dern will be coming into this bout having won her last outing against Tecia Torres. Dern can secure her spot in the title race with a win over the number six ranked Xiaonan.
